We Were Right... Weight Watchers is the Best!
May 8, 2007 08:39

      woman on scale

In the self improvement section of our website, we touted the Weight Watcher's diet plan as the best plan all-around for losing weight... and keeping it off! We cited lots of research and our own personal trials using this program, and recommended it above all others.

The June, 2007 issue of Consumer Reports magazine supports our opinion. In an article titled "Rating the Diets", they line up 8 of the most popular diet plans out there today: Volumetrics, WW, Jenny Craig, Slim-Fast, eDiets, Zone diet, and Atkins. Volumetrics and Weight Watchers were the two highest rated programs. And although Volumetrics did nudge out WW for quick short-term weight loss, their recipes were also judged somewhat time-consuming to prepare. WW meals were judged appetizing, nutritious, and fairly easy to prepare. WW also had a lower long-term dropout rate.

We maintain that for today's busy adult, Weight Watchers still delivers the best overall weight reduction program, with high marks for low dropout rate, ease of use, and lifelong nutritional education value. This recent Consumer Report survey just adds more proof to our pudding!

Winning Poem: Remembering Mom On Mother's Day
May 10, 2007 10:21

     mother and daughter

This is our writing contest winner for May, 2007:

She could see all this in her mind
Even though she hadn't been there
It was in June, with flowers in bloom
The sun very bright that morning

Mom humming in the next room
Pancakes and sausage already made
Mom getting ready for the day
Stopped by to kiss me and said so long
Gave me a hug and said, "I Love You"

She heard the car start
Ran to the window, she was already gone

Tears fill my eyes as I try to remember
What was it I heard, how can I recall
It was in the moment, those words came to mind
"I Love You darling, see you tonight"

So many years have gone by it seems surreal
This Mother's Day makes it seem so real.

What's For Dinner? Try this great recipe!
May 15, 2007 07:15

I have made this dish for many a "potluck" gathering, and have never failed to have some requests for the recipe. People love it!

       mexican chicken casserole

1 chicken, boiled, or pick up a deli rotisserie chicken to save time
(or just 3 lge. chicken breasts, if desired)
1 chopped onion
1 chopped bel pepper
1 can chicken broth (or use broth from boiling the chicken)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can Rotel tomatoes, diced
Pkg. flour tortillas
Grated cheddar cheese (1-2 cups)
2 tsp. chili powder

Pick all the lean meat from the chicken, dice/slice and set aside. In large skillet, saute the onion and bel pepper in butter til tender. Stir in the 4 cans of soups/tomatoes. Stir in the chicken meat and simmer over medium heat til well mixed and hot.

Lightly oil a lasagna pan, then layer like a lasagna: tortillas, 1/3 soup mixture, 1/3 the cheese; repeat this 3 times, with cheese on top. Sprinkle chili powder on top of the casserole.

Bake in 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes, til lightly browned and bubbly. Delicious with a nice salad and chilled Chablis or frosty Mexican beer.

Where the Boys Are...
May 16, 2007 08:41

Where the Boys Are...

Are you old enough to remember Connie Francis’ song “Where The Boys Are”? She pines for her yet unmet love:

“Where the boys are, someone waits for me...
A smilin’ face, a warm embrace, two arms to hold me tenderly"...

Don’t you wish you could just be walking down the street one day, and your soul mate would find you in the crowd? what a romantic notion... but not very realistic, you know.

Okay, not an option; so common sense would then tell you to go where the odds are stacked in your favor — where you’d be surrounded by hordes of intelligent, fun-seeking, educated, fit, straight, eligible bachelors. There's safety in numbers.

On a recent Oprah Show, she revealed the best cities to meet single men. Based on an article from Men’s Health Magazine, entitled “Women, Here’s the Best Place to Find a Man”, she listed the top cities in which to find men over 35.

Men’s Health sorted data by 7 criteria: fitness, ratio of single men/women, low divorce rate, philanthropy, education, and thrill factor. What they didn’t factor in are things like social skills, employment data and interest in settling down.

Their findings: The 5 American cities with the most & best eligible bachelors were:
1.San José
2.Salt Lake City
3.Arlington, TX
4.Raleigh, NC
5.San Francisco

Interesting information. But useless. What are you gonna do, pack your bags and head for the Bay Area, where the median price for a home is $700K? Are you a single woman who is actually having trouble deciding on what new city to move to? Then by all means, pick one of the above. But if you are like the rest of us working stiffs, you have to make do with what ya got!

Take heart, though, there are many ways to increase your chances of finding your own true love... right in your own back yard. Give this a quick read: Where & How to Meet Good Men.

First Love is True Love
May 17, 2007 07:07

Stumbled across an interesting blog entry by Yasmin Ahmad on first love :

---"First love has always fascinated me because it happens to you at a time when you have not yet learned to lie to yourself. With first love, within five minutes, you accept the other person for everything that they are, warts and all. I believe that our first love is the truest love of all. Unfortunately, most people I know do not even believe there is such a thing as "true love".

They remind me of the last words in a poem by Wislawa Szymborska:
"Let the people who never find true love believe that there is no such thing. Their faith will make it easier for them to live and die."

P.S.From Stella: There is such a thing as true love. Just because you haven't found it yet doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I do not believe that there is only one true love meant for you in this universe. I think that true love probably passes right under your nose many times during your life. You just have to be receptive to it, recognize it when it comes, and be willing to nurture it as the delicate and fragile treasure it is.

This is a great book to help you become more receptive to love when it passes by:

Funny Predictions for the future, From the Past...
May 23, 2007 07:23

Tired of all those predictions people make at the start of the new year? Don't worry - most of them probably will never come true. At least, that's the opinion of Cynthia Crossen in the Wall Street Journal, who explains that even the smartest people throughout history have been unable to predict the future: "If you are tempted to make predictions about the future... consider keeping them to yourself. History can so easily make a fool of you." (The Rest of the Story...)

Found Bloglet: One Man's Definition of True Love
May 24, 2007 08:05

     chocolate bar

True love is found when two people can look into each other's hearts and forget all about wealth, position in society and material belongings. True love is also found when two people can look deep into the other's soul and see past the little habits that they may not be partial to.

Love is all about wanting to be with a person constantly, always wishing to feel their warmth inside. Love is looking at someone and feeling all your happiness rush to the forefront of your mind, letting all your woes disappear.

Having found true love, I can tell you that it is all about two souls becoming entwined together and knowing that you would do anything for the person you are with. This includes little things like going to the store if they want a chocolate bar, to the big things like travel 2,500 miles just to see their face....both things I have done.

You Gotta See These! Ever Hear of Julian Beever?
May 29, 2007 09:27

We have a special treat for you this week. For the next 4 days, we are going to present photos of what we call "Artwork for the Common Man", by Julian Beever...

Julian is an English artist who specializes in... sidewalk art!!!
But this ain't no ordinary hopscotch chalking we're talking about. Julian creates fantastic scenes on the pavement in England, France, Germany, US, Australia and Belgium. What's so special about that? Check out his amazing 3D illusions inside...

***Please note: We usually compact (optimize) our images in this website, so they will load quickly. The tradeoff for that is the quality of the image. However, for these works of art, we are going to go for a little higher quality/detail, so you can really experience them properly. The tradeoff: they may take a little longer to load. Be patient! It's worth the wait! Don't forget! These are all drawings.

Just one final thought before we begin: I Wonder how Julian feels about rain?

Take your time with each picture, remembering that they are drawings. Sometimes people step into the scene to complete it, but most everything else is pastel chalks! Enjoy! (The Rest of the Story...)
