CAYE CAULKER, BELIZE--- Unassuming, relaxing, genuine
Belize is a medium sized country (8,800 sq miles) in Central America, bordered on the north by Mexico, and on the east and south by Guatemala. It juts out into the Caribbean Sea, and enjoys tropical breezes, a temperate climate and several cool out-islands, sorta like the Bahamas. They used to be a British colony, and English is widely spoken. For a great overall website on what Belize has to offer, visit www.travelbelize.org. Don't miss the Mayan ruins and Cave Tubing! And for a really, really, really unique experience, go "zip-lining" through the trees in the rain forest! Just ask 'em...
Anyway, we stayed on Caye Caulker, a 40 minute water taxi ride from Belize City. This little island is way off the beaten track. It is unassuming, somewhat primitive, quiet, a little bit littered, and perfect for an unusual and relaxing holiday! There are only a couple of cars, no paved roads, children (safely) play in the sandy pathways, dodging the golf carts and bicycles, and dogs dig little holes in the cool sand to park their overheated backsides.
Accommodations are modest and cheap, and you can partake of many water sports (scuba, snorkeling, fishing) and tours to the mainland, all at very reasonable prices. (Be forewarned, some of the motel rooms do not have A/C, so ask if that is a must for you). At dusk, several vendors vie for your $$ by setting up their barbecues on the beach. The smells of grilled lobster tails and freshly caught snapper fill the air.
What a refreshing break from the usual rat-race and touristy locales we have visited before! There is nothing much to do on Caye Caulker other than walk around the quaint island, decide what you want for dinner that night, and enjoy a cold Belikin beer as you gaze out on the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean.
