What makes men back off from a woman?

Was dating a man for 9 months; things were great. At 7 months he began to back off. What happened?? I am so very confused. He even told me to start dating other men.

He simply is not the man for you. He at least has the integrity to be honest with you. Cut your losses, break off clean. Do not waste time trying to drag this relationship on. The right man for you is out there somewhere.
